Yes, we know that Muffuletta is not a ferment at all, but a sandwich, and we here at Britt’s want to bring you our version of the Muffuletta Olive Salad that is most famously found in the well-known sandwich.
Muffuletta actually refers to a Sicilian bread, found in any Sicilian bakery. It is a 10-to-12-inch round loaf, usually flattened, with a soft, fluffy inside and a light crust, sprinkled with sesame seeds. This loaf is cut horizontally and stuffed with deli favorites; salami, ham, Swiss cheese, provolone, mortadella, and the flavorful Muffuletta Olive Salad. The original olive salad is a mix of carrots, celery, cauliflower, green and Kalamata olives, olive oil, oregano, and dried basil: mixed, and marinated for up to 24 hours. We follow the same original recipe but instead of fresh vegetables, we replace it with our fermented Britt’s Mix.
